January 22 - 23, 2009: ICLRD Fourth Annual Conference

The annual conference of the International Centre for Local and Regional Development (ICLRD) will take place on 22-23 January 2009 in the Radisson SAS Hotel, Letterkenny, County Donegal. Now in its 4th year, the annual ICLRD conferences are growing in reputation and, with regard to the themes of spatial planning, community development, inter-jurisdictional collaboration and economic growth and development, they are now considered as leading forums and spaces for debate, networking and cross-learning.  To facilitate greater opportunities for networking, we have revised the format of our conference to include a reception and conference dinner; with the conference itself being held over two days (the afternoon of the 22nd and the morning of the 23rd January).

Day 1 of this Conference will focus on issues of strategic territorial planning at a national, regional and inter-jurisdictional level.  Confirmed speakers for this day include representatives from the Welsh Spatial Planning Unit, the Scottish Spatial Planning Unit and the Planning Section of the Department of Communities and Local Government in England.

Day 2 is more regional in its focus and addresses the themes of balanced regional development in urban and rural environments through designated growth poles. This will include presentations on regions such as the Newry-Dundalk Twin-City, the Atlantic and Cork Gateways and the Northwest Gateway Initiative. We will also have presentations on international practices, including a review of smart growth policies as applied in Maryland and a European example of cross-border regional cooperation.
